Moles are classed in the UK as a major agricultural and horticultural pest. They are singlehandedly responsible for damaging millions of pounds worth of agricultural and horticultural land each year.
The soil that moles push to the surface can contaminate silage, making it unpalatable; exposed stones from their hills can also damage machinery, while fresh hills can cause a weed invasion, decreasing crop yields.
Domestically and horticulturally, they can damage young plants by exposing the root system and causing the plant to dry out, wither and die. The only reliable method of exterminating moles, however, is trapping and fumigation. Several traps and lots of patience are required to complete the job.
