These microscopic creatures caused the Black Death in Europe and Asia in the 14th to 17th centuries, and they are still around. Cats are said to be responsible for most modern flea infestations, while wall-to-wall carpeting also provides a relatively safe haven for their larvae to develop.
Fleas can be carriers of disease or may transmit parasitic worms. The most serious infection which they can spread is bubonic plague, transmitted to humans via rodent fleas. They may also carry murine typhus and are probably a major flea carrier of disease. The dog flea is an intermediate host of the dog tapeworm, which can at times be transmitted to humans.
Fleas feed on blood, and lay eggs either on pets or in their bedding materials. A thorough treatment of all floor and fabric areas is essential to completely eradicate fleas, and insecticides with hormone growth regulators should be used to break their lifecycle. A four-hour post-treatment exclusion is essential.
Selecting the exact flea-control measure, however, depends, to a large extent, on the size of the problem, as well as the initial source. Call us now to schedule a visit and get a more informed analysis on your particular situation.
