You have just polished your car and are extremely proud of your handywork. You go back indoors to make yourself a sandwich. The sight that greets you when you look out of the kitchen window at your car leaves your jaw trailing on the floor. The vehicle, which you had just shined after hours of work, is covered with bird droppings! You look up and see a flock of pigeons mocking you.
Or consider this: you're sitting outside on a fine Sunday, reading the newspaper. All of a sudden, you hear a gull's shrill cry, look up and barely dodge an angry seagull as it tries to gauge out your eye.
Either way, you have a bird-control problem. Feral Pigeons, descendants of the Rock Doves of the coastal areas, are a common sight in London, where they roost high up on buildings. Their excrement carries the risk of disease and damages everything that it falls on. Seagulls can also be a nuisance because of the constant noise. Moreover, they become aggressive during breeding season, so much so that attacks on humans are not unheard of. Like Pigeons, there droppings carry a health risk as well.
Bird Proofing Systems
Pigeon Proofing systems involve a number of proactive measures to deter these birds. Bird netting, bird points and sprung pin and wire systems can all be employed to ensure that the problem species are not able to cause problems on or around the protected building.
Spiking
Anti-roosting bird spikes prevent pigeons from mistaking your property for a home of their own. These spikes do not harm birds, and are recommended by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the Pigeon Control Advisory Service (PICAS).
Bird spiking, either steel or plastic, can be installed at windows, pipes or ledges where birds roost. The dense pattern of the protruding pins makes it impossible for birds to land, forcing them to move elsewhere without hurting them.
